What is Gender?

Gender :

A Gender is a biological sex the some of biological characteristics by which male and female and other organism are distinguished. Biological sex (gender) a division into which an organism is placed according to its reproductive functions of organ.

The word GENDER comes from Latin word Genus which means kind or sort.

EX.

A boy is walking in the garden.

A girl is singing.

She meet her teacher.

I put a book on the table.

Gender

There are four kinds of Gender :

  1. Masculine Gender
  2. Feminine Gender
  3. Common Gender
  4. Neuter Gender

What is Masculine Gender?

All names of male persons and animals are called masculine gender.

A boy is walking in the garden.

In the above sentence we have a word boy which is masculine gender.

Ex.

King, Lion, Father ,Hero, Man .

What is Feminine Gender?

All names of female persons and animals are called Feminine gender .

A girl is singing.

In the above sentence we have a word Girl which is Feminine gender.

Ex.

Queen, Lioness, Mother, Mother, Heroine,Women.

What is Common Gender?

Names that can be applied to both male and female are of common Gender.

She meet her teacher.

In the above sentence we have a word Teacher which is common gender because a teacher may be male or female.

Ex.

Child, Friend, Pupil, Baby, Neighbour.

What is Neuter Gender?

Neuter means neither. It indicated neither male nor female. The name of all inanimate things ,things which are neither male nor female it’s means things which are without life ,are said to be of the neuter genders.

Ex.

Book, Chair, table, Pen, room, tree.

Gender

Remember that in modern English the genders of a noun is entirely a matter of sex or the absence of sex. It has nothing to do with the form of a noun.

Also Remember that :

  1. Abstract noun and collective nouns are regarded as belonging to the neuter . Ex. Flock, crowd , bevy, troop, beauty, truth, kindness, height.
  2. Collective Nouns, even when they denote living beings, are considered to be of the neuter.

Ex.

The committee has revised it’s decision.

The jury gave it’s verdict.

3. Young children and the lower animals are also considered to be of the neuter genders .

Ex. The child knows it’s own mother .

4. Sometimes, inanimate objects or objects without life, are personified or spoken of as if they were living persons. We then regard them as males or females.

5. A ship is always spoken of as she .

Ex.

The ship fought her way through the stormy waves.

Things remarkable for their strength, firmness or energy are regarded as males. Ex. The sun, Summer, Time , Summer, time, death, thunder etc.

Then the sun shot his bright rays.

Death doesn’t spare his victim.

Gender

Things remarkable for their beauty, gentleness, gracefulness are regarded as females. Ex. The moon, spring, Autumn, nature, liberty, Hope, peace etc.

The moon put on her silvery shoes.

Peace hath her victims no less renowned than war.

Ways of forming The Feminine of Noun :

Masculine Feminine

  1. Man Women
  2. Boy Girl
  3. Nephew Niece
  4. Uncle Aunt
  5. Monk Nun
  6. Lord Lady
  7. Buck Doe
  8. Bull Cow
  9. Bullock Heifer
  10. Drake Duck
  11. Stag Hind
  12. Wizard Witch

By adding “Ess” to the Masculine

Masculine Feminine

  1. Host Hostess
  2. Heir Heiress
  3. Author Authoress
  4. Baron Baroness
  5. Count Countess
  6. Giant Giantess
  7. Mayor Mayoress
  8. Peer Peeress
  9. Priest Priestess
  10. prophet Prophetess
  11. Shepherd Shepherdess
  12. Steward Stewardess

By adding a word indicating sex before or after the main word

Masculine Feminine

  1. He goat She goat
  2. Bull calf Cow calf
  3. Cock sparrow Hen sparrow

  7. Merman Mermaid

Fill up the gaps in the following sentences with the feminine forms of the words given in bracket at the end :
